DYI IKEA Stool

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

After the construction of the table for the office nook the bug of DYI got too much into me to ignore.
Even if it is repainting a small stool, some imagination and painters tape will go a long way.
Returning from our last IKEA trip along with the rest of our purchases we got an IKEA ODDVAR stool ( as pictured below courtesy of IKEA.no )made of pine.

I used a normal roller to paint the stool white with Beckers panelgrund color Kokos.
I painted the parts of the stool before assembling it.
Next day I masked the stool with blue painters tape and applied another coat of white color and waited for it to dry. Then I sprayed painted the desired parts golden and immediately and very carefully removed the masking tape.
The reason we apply another coat of the base color is an old trick so the second color will not sip though the tape.
At the end I applied a layer of clear glaze to finish off the stool and protect it.

While I usually prefer stools that are rougher looking, for now this particular one has won a place in my heart and in the foyer.

Chocolate Fondant

Monday, July 29, 2013

It is so funny that while this is still an interior design blog at heart, somehow for now it ended up having more recipes than deco.
But I cannot not share this.
It is the perfect chocolate fondant recipe and it took me 2 days to perfect it.

Instructions :

Combine sugar and cornstarch in a medium bawl.
In a separate bowl whisk the eggs for 2-3 min.
Melt the butter in a saucepan.
Add the chocolate and mix until smooth.
Add the chocolate mixture in the dry ingredients and mix well.
Add slowly the eggs while whisking in medium speed until the batter and smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
Fill in a ring mold or a parchment lined ramekin with the fondant batter 3/4 of the way full.
Bake at 200 C preheated oven for 17 to 20 min.

While this recipe will produce greatly flavored chocolate fondants, it remains up to your taste on how runny you want them to be. Experiment with baking time until you reach your perfect consistency! 17min will produce very runny fondants like pictured above, or closer to 20min will produce more of a spongy texture.

Either way they taste delicious!

Entry

Friday, July 19, 2013

First look of entryway, it was long due to say the least.
When I first entered the house all of the walls were painted in an unspecified shade of brown.
True to form I painted over a few coats of white to brighten up the space.
The fact that there are no windows downstairs still saddens me.

This is on the opposite side of the side table as we enter the house.
A nice bench where you can sit and remove your shoes is not only useful but it provides with a nice place to leave your handbag or anything you would rather not put on the floor.

Last but not least a little snippet of under the stairs.
I needed a furniture to leave things on when downstairs.
Ipads and iphones will always have a home now.

While this is the first view, I have long way to go before it is remotely finished.
If anything I need to frame some of my beloved photos or hang my paintings.
Hopefully in a few months my books will also move in the house...

To be continued..

Evening Pie

Thursday, July 18, 2013

There is always room for pie.
At the evening with some tea when it rains.
This crust is so very versatile, for pie or quiche or even for desserts. Adjust the width depending on your liking and your dish!

Don't forget to pinch the first layer with a fork before blind baking and cover the first layer with a piece of cooking paper.

Chocolate Banana Bites

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

I have a soft spot for chocolate and ice cream.
This is the perfect combination for summer days! And of course for winter days also.
They are surprisingly easy to make and they taste like vanilla chocolate bites with a hint of banana.

At 20calories a pop ( even less if your chocolate coating is thinner ) they are the perfect solution that you can keep in your freezer for a long long time. If you like vanilla and chocolate these pops will soon become an instant favorite of yours. And they are so easy to make!

Instructions

Cut as many bananas as you want in pieces . Any size you like. I prefer slimmer.

Melt the chocolate of your preference in the microwave ( careful it burns very easily) or heat some water and place the pieces in a second pot above the heating water.
Proceed to coat the bites one by one by dropping them with a spoon into the melted chocolate. Arrange them on a sheet of cooking paper in any pan that you can safely leave in your freezer for 2 to 3 hours.

Office nook

Sunday, July 14, 2013

While I am still trying to figure out what is the best way to configure this blog and the chaos that follows as you register your own domain, at least I am doing it at our new "office".
Our previous office was located downstairs in one of the spare bedrooms.
While it is great to have a designated room for working/playing/studying when home, our house offered the perfect spot upstairs for a home office.
While it is not even close as being finished yet, the new desk is finally painted and dry enough to support screens, keyboards and everything that makes an office nook comfortable.
I wanted a rather big surface to host both our pc's while still having more than enough room to move without hitting each other and feeling we are invading each others space. I figured that a custom made desk would be the only way to go and I was lucky enough to find the perfect piece of wood. An enormous tree nicknamed The King was weathered from norwegian winter and fell. I acquired two large pieces each around 2.5m lenght , 0.6m height and with 6cm width.
Perfect. Just perfect.
I love how organic the surface is , the front part of the desk was sanded carefully so all the curves of the trunk would be preserved. The top surface still bares all the marks of the trunk as well. For the legs the second  piece received the same treatment. We cut it in pieces and attached them at the ends of the top surface.
So simple yet the feeling of the old tree makes this project extremely unique.
The "nook" still needs chairs and since the living room is so close I know office style chairs will not work. I do however have my eye on these amazing lounge chairs from  Bohus
( Image below courtesy of Bohus website )

I have so many ideas for this nook I feel like a kid in a candy store.
At least I have narrowed down the theme to black and white with colorful accents.
When there is a lot of clutter in the room the best way to counteract all of the noise is to narrow down to one or two neutral colors then create contrast with accessories in vivid colors.
While my side of the nook is white, the little details are colorful enough to bring life and break the white monotony.
Flowers will always make any room seem brighter. For vases you can always use those forgotten ceramic milk jugs you wanted to throw away.

A comfortable place to work at home will brighten our mood and make us feel more energetic.
It is worth investing some time and effort, even on a small budget a little imagination and some research will go a long way.
